Stars associated to Eagle Nebula (M16=NGC6611)

2011

Massive star-forming regions are characterized by intense ionizing fluxes, strong stellar winds and, occasionally, supernovae explosions, all of which have important effects on the surrounding media, on the star-formation process and on the evolution of young stars and their circumstellar disks. We present a multiband study of the massive young cluster NGC 6611 and its parental cloud (the Eagle Nebula) with the aim of studying how OB stars affect the early stellar evolution and the formation of other stars. We search for evidence of triggering of star formation by the massive stars inside NGC 6611 on a large spatial scale (~10 parsec) and ongoing disk photoevaporation in NGC 6611 and how it…

Blue stars with disk photometry in NGC 6611

2010

NGC 6611 and its parental cloud, the Eagle Nebula (M 16), are well-studied star-forming regions, thanks to their large content of both OB stars and stars with disks and the observed ongoing star formation. In our previous studies of the Eagle Nebula, we identified 834 disk-bearing stars associated with the cloud, after detecting their excesses in NIR bands from J band to 8.0um. In this paper, we study in detail the nature of a subsample of disk-bearing stars that show peculiar characteristics. They appear older than the other members in the V vs. V-I diagram, and/or they have one or more IRAC colors at pure photospheric values, despite showing NIR excesses, when optical and infrared colors …

Alignment of cone beam computed tomography data using intra-oral fiducial markers.

2009

This article illustrates a new method to align and merge two partially overlapping volumes each of them generated by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aggregate volume covers a larger area of investigation and is determined by localizing one fixed LEGO brick in both of the primal volumes. Based on the LEGO brick an approximate registration of the volumes is determined. Afterwards we improve the transformation by minimizing the difference in overlapping space. In this paper we present a method which automates these two steps and provides an aligned volume.

Nonlinearity in intergenerational income transmission: A cross-country analysis

2016

Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore nonlinearity in intergenerational income transmission. We use a set of occupational tables in different countries to test nonlinearity. We also empirically address how policy variables can affect nonlinearity. Our findings suggest that concavity is supported in those societies with less credit constraints, but with more poverty and income inequality; education has an increasing effect on convexity.

A kink that makes you sick : The effect of sick pay on absence

2018

We exploit a regression kink design to estimate the elasticity of the duration of sickness absence with respect to replacement rate. Elasticity is a central parameter in defining the optimal social insurance scheme compensating for lost earnings due to sickness. We use comprehensive administrative data and a kink in the policy rule near the median earnings. We find a statistically significant estimate of the elasticity of the order of one. peerReviewed

Teaching and Learning of Algebra

2015

Topic Study Group 9 aimed to bring together researchers, developers and teachers who investigate and develop theoretical accounts of the teaching and learning of algebra. The group sought both empirically grounded contributions focussing on the learning and teaching of algebra in diverse classrooms settings, the evolution of algebraic reasoning from elementary through university schooling as well as theoretical contributions throwing light on the complexities involved in teaching and learning of algebra. Prospective contributors were requested to address one or more of the following themes: early algebra, use of ICT in algebra classrooms, proof and proving in algebra, problem solving, semio…

Study of single top production at high energy electron positron colliders

2014

The effect of single top production on the study of top quark pair production in future high energy electron--positron colliders is evaluated. The rate of the single top quark production process is sizeable throughout a large range of center-of-mass energies and cannot easily be distinguished from the dominant pair production process. We discuss the impact on the top quark mass extraction from a scan through the pair production threshold and the determination of top quark form factors in the continuum. These results advocate for the exploration of the inclusive $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ process, that includes both top quark pair and single top quark production.

Understanding the detector behavior through Montecarlo and calibration studies in view of the SOX measurement

2015

International audience; Borexino is an unsegmented neutrino detector operating at LNGS in central Italy. The experiment has shown its performances through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geoneutrino detection. These performances make it an ideal tool to accomplish a state- of-the-art experiment able to test the existence of sterile neutrinos (SOX experiment). For both the solar and the SOX analysis, a good understanding of the detector response is fundamental. Consequently, calibration campaigns with radioactive sources have been performed over the years. The calibration data are of extreme importance to develop an accurate Monte Carlo code. This code is used in all the n…
